For all those who adore cats the Christmas Cats Advent Calendar is a beautiful panel for a nice present.
First of all I’ve to tell you, that the first row isn’t very accurate compared to the four other rows. So always check the width before sewing.
If in your country Christmas is on the 24th you just have to put another piece of fabric to cover the 25th.
I’ve started with the first row. Cut the fabric and fold over the top then sew it down. I’ve chosen a thread in gold because this matches beautifully with the fabric.
To prevent the fabric from moving I’d recommend to sew it down by hand before sewing it with the machine.
First you sew the side below and then the sides between. Because there are already printed lines it’s pretty easy to get it accurate.
For cutting the fabric I’d reccomend a roller cutter.
Finished top with one covered image for the 25th in the center.
I’ve choosen a background-fabric from an old curtain and a piece of batting i still had. You want to make a Quilt-Sandwich. You can pin it down or you can use basting spray for it. I don’t like the spray too much because it’s sticky and sometimes the needle doesn’t work through the fabric smoothly. So what I like to do is using curved safety pins especially for quilters. Look out for large ones. It’s easier to work with them.
If you’re done you can quilt the sandwich. I’ve chosen to quilt it in horizonal lines and two times a square around.
You then want to trim the quilt sandwich. Use the roller cutter.
For the binding you can choose a color you like. I usually like to use the colours that already exists in my fabric.
Whatever color you use for your binding, the quilt will seem to have this color in particular.
The best Tutorial for a proper binding is the one from Jenny, the “Ultimate Binding Tutorial“. I prefer to sew the binding by machine on the front, and the back by hand. It looks pretty nice and you don’t see the stitches.
Use some quilt clips they make your job a lot more easier. However you could use some clothespin too, if you don’t have quilt clips.
You are going to sew the back by hand.
To hang your calendar on a wall you may want to sew some hanger on it. There are lots of other solutions too of course.
And there you have it:
