The tank top “Valerie” is a sewing pattern, which you can currently download for free at Makerist (language: german).
Sewing pattern “Valerie” Tank Top
For my Burda blouse which is slightly transparent I was looking for a sewing pattern for a tank top. Although a tank top isn’t quite hard to sew, i had some issues and the production took more time than expected. First of all because I had to make some adjustments to the sewing pattern. My waist is smaller and my hip a bit larger than the measurements from the pattern.
Knit with rayon
Those among you who already have a coverstitch machine and are experienced in using the tape binder you’ll know that the fabric rolls itself sometimes when it has rayon in it. I had to try out several adjustments to find the correct settings. Finally the ultimate advice from Tanja to put the differential on 1.5 helped.
Knit strip – preparation for the tape binder
In order to prevent the knit from twisting I have rolled it around a wooden spoon. If only the construction would turn by itself this would be marvellous! Fill a cookie jar with some stones from the garden and the wooden spoon with your fabric around it is sound and safe!
If your knit also has some rayon in it and behaves not the way you would like it to, then spray a little ironing starch on it and give it a good press. Alternatively, you could dissolve water soluble embroidery stabilizer in a bowl of water. Then spray the mixture onto your fabric strip. Honestly I havent’t tried this yet, but it should give your fabric way more stabilisation, so I’ve heard from other sewers.
Sometimes during the sewing I forgot to unwind the fabric from my wooden spoon and that’s the reason why the binding is sometimes a bit tighter.
Settings for your coverstich-machine and threads
The hem is sewed with two needles, the one left and the one in the middle. For threads, I used Alcazar 40, an embroidery thread, which my mother gave me as a present. I am assuming that the thread is a bit older and I think I would have to throw it away. There were some issues like for example the thread tore two times apart and was twisted all the time. Also thread can loose much of its brilliance over the years in your storage place. Well, nobody get’s younger, am I right?
For the hook thread, I used Madeira Aerofil sewing and decorating yarn No. 8722.
The settings for my Elna Easycover (which is the same Model as Janome Coverpro 1000CPX or Janome Coverpro 2000):
Needles left / middle: 8/8
Differential .: 1.5
Stitch length: 3.5
I absolutely have to take closer look into adjustments of sewing pattern. I will visit a school next month for sewing pattern construction. I will write about it soon, promised!
